Both the Desert View East Entrance and the South Entrance are open 24 hours a day year round. The North Rim has a shorter season from mid May through mid October.

Ideally, enter the park early in the morning or late in the afternoon as temperatures are cooler and the light is better for taking photographs. For many visitors, witnessing sunrise over the Grand Canyon is the highlight of their trip.

Summertime is peak season in the Grand Canyon and you can expect constant crowds and parking areas to fill up quickly near popular trailheads and viewpoints all summer long. You can buy your National Park pass in advance online to save time at the entrance stations.

Spring and fall are generally the best times to visit with fewer visitors and cooler temperatures.

Summer temperatures on the South Rim are typically between 50°F to 80°F but inner canyon temperatures are extreme and daytime highs at the river (5000 feet below the rim) often exceed 100°F. North Rim summer temperatures are cooler than those on the South Rim because of its higher elevation.

Visiting in winter is good for off-season hotel rates and milder sunny weather. Winter conditions at the South Rim can be extreme so expect snow and ice which may cause roads and trails to be closed or dangerous. Winter snowfall adds to the already amazing scenery

The weather can change quickly in any season so always check for the latest conditions on the National Parks Service website or at the park visitors centre before starting your visit.
