The journey south to Seward on the Coastal Classic route hugs the coastline along Turnagain Arm. South of Portage, the train diverges from the highway into a remote, rugged section, passing through Placer River Valley, by Spencer Glacier, and over the Kenai Mountains. Upon arrival in Seward, you'll hike the Resurrection River Trail through dense spruce and hemlock forest with occasional views of the river valley and mountains. Day 2 Hike Harding Icefield Start the day with a hearty breakfast before heading to the Harding Icefield. Hike along the Exit Glacier Overlook Trail, a moderately strenuous path offering expansive views of Exit Glacier. For a challenge, continue to the 700-square-mile Harding Icefield. The trail meanders through alder and cottonwood forest and heather-filled meadows, rising above the tree line to reveal a horizon of snow and ice, punctuated by nunataks. Day 3 Kenai Fjords National Park Wilderness Cruise Explore Kenai Fjords National Park by boat. Board a small ship, meet the captain and crew, and embark on a journey through the park. Spot a variety of wildlife, including bears, moose, sea otters, seals, and whales. Enjoy views of tidal glaciers and abundant sea life from the deck, guided by a naturalist. Lunch is provided on board. Day 4 Float/Raft the Kenai River, Visit Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Begin with an incredible float rafting trip on the Kenai River. Spot wildlife like bears, moose, beavers, and bald eagles along the riverbanks. Immerse yourself in the spectacular scenery as you float through this stunning landscape. Day 5 Kayaking Peterson Bay, Hiking to Grewingk Glacier Take a water taxi to the protected Peterson Bay for a morning of kayaking. Keep an eye out for local wildlife as you paddle to the trailhead for the afternoon hike. Enjoy a sack lunch on the beach before hiking three miles to Grewingk Glacier. Day 6 Morning Hike to Bishop's Beach, Say Goodbye After a leisurely breakfast, take a short hike to Bishop's Beach for stunning views of the bay and surrounding mountains. To return to Anchorage, you can book a short flight with Ravn Alaska or take a five-hour van transfer. Alternatively, extend your stay in Homer for halibut fishing or grizzly bear viewing in nearby Katmai or Lake Clark National Parks, just a short flight away with Ravn Alaska. |
