The hues of the sandstone are the richest in the early morning and late afternoon, although if you’d like to take in the canyon’s famous beams of light, heading in starting around high noon is best — especially during the summer. The rock, a famed landmark along US 163, rises east of the highway above the west bank of the San Juan River.

Moab: Moab’s unique combination of beautiful red rock scenery, along with the cool waters of the Colorado River, has made it one of the most sought after destinations in the southwest.

So go high, or go very, very low; get hot, or chill out with amazing desert views. Death Valley delivers on every end of the scale.

Drive from Capitol Reef Resort to Bryce Canyon: 2 hours 30 minutes (124 miles) via UT-12 W.

Utah’s Scenic Byway 12: This is 122.863 miles (to be exact) of pure driving bliss.

Welcome to Utah’s Scenic Byway 12, also known as “A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway.” What’s more, this stretch of highway is also designated an All-American Road. Only one-third of America’s scenic byways get this distinction, and it’s given because these roads offer unique features that you can’t find elsewhere making these byways tourist destinations unto themselves.

Red Canyon: When you visit the beautiful canyon with its stunning hoodoo formations, red cliffs, pink soil, and ponderosa pines you will wonder why the area was not incorporated into the nearby national park. Red Canyon is equally saturated with geological treasures, but is free from the masses of tourists that pack the trails in Bryce. In Red Canyon you will be left to enjoy the beauty and wonder of the canyon in solitude.

From Red Canyon you can also access Losee Canyon and Casto Canyon, also part of Dixie National Forest. These canyons are little known scenic gems that you won’t want to miss out on in your rush to visit the more famous Bryce Canyon.

Day 2 - 6: Moab | Arches National Park | Canyonlands National Park

Arches National Park: Although over 2,000 arches are located within the park’s 76,518 acres, the park also contains an astounding variety of other geological formations. Colossal sandstone fins, massive balanced rocks, soaring pinnacles and spires dwarf visitors as they explore the park’s viewpoints and hiking trails.

Fiery Furnace

Drive the scenic drive and hike some of the longer trails in the park, such as the trails to Double O Arch, Tower Arch, Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch. Sign up for a ranger guided hike into the Fiery Furnace.

Canyonlands National Park: The easiest way to see the park is with a visit to the Island in the Sky district, only 32 miles from Moab. The Island in the Sky offers many pull outs with spectacular views along the paved scenic drive.

The Island in the Sky sits atop a massive 1,500- foot mesa, quite literally an Island in the Sky. 20 miles of paved roads lead to many of the most spectacular views in canyon country. From these lofty viewpoints visitors can often see over 100 miles in any given direction resulting in panoramic views that encompass thousands of square miles of canyon country.

Drive the paved scenic drive and hike some of the longer trails in the park, such as the 5-mile round trip Neck Spring Trail.
